Turn free-trial users into paying customers
A simple one-message follow-up sequence that moves trial users to paid — without feeling pushy.
You spent real money getting someone to sign up for your free trial. Now the clock is ticking, and most of those users will quietly disappear when the trial ends — not because they hate your product, but because life got busy and no one nudged them at the right moment.
The fix isn't a complicated drip campaign. It's a tight sequence of well-timed, human-sounding messages — one per key moment — that remind people why they signed up and make it dead easy to say yes to paying.
1. Send a "quick win" message on day one
Most trial users never get past signup. The single biggest predictor of conversion is whether someone actually uses your product in the first 24 hours. Your job is to hand them one small, concrete win — fast.
Send a message within an hour of signup that skips the welcome fluff and gives them a single action to take right now. Something like: "You're in. To get [specific result] in the next 10 minutes, just do this one thing: [link/step]." Keep it to three sentences. The goal is momentum, not information.
2. Check in at the halfway point with a usage prompt
At the midpoint of your trial (day 7 of a 14-day trial, day 15 of a 30-day trial), send a message that references what they've actually done — or haven't done. If you can personalise based on activity, do it:
- Active users: Highlight a feature they haven't tried yet that's directly tied to the outcome they care about.
- Inactive users: Ask one honest question — "Did something get in the way?" — and offer a 10-minute call or a short setup guide.
This message does two things: it shows you're paying attention, and it surfaces the objection before it becomes a silent churn.
3. Send the "what you'd lose" message two days before expiry
Two days before the trial ends, don't lead with pricing. Lead with loss. Remind them what goes away — their saved data, their settings, their progress, their integrations — if they don't upgrade.
Be specific: "Your 3 saved reports and your custom workflow disappear on Thursday. Here's how to keep them." Then include the upgrade link. This isn't fear-mongering; it's useful information. People genuinely forget what they've built inside a product and this message makes it real.
4. On expiry day, make one direct ask
The day the trial ends, send one plain, direct message. No countdown graphics, no exclamation marks. Just a short note that says the trial is over, here's what the paid plan costs, and here's the link to continue.
The tone should feel like a text from a founder, not a marketing email:
"Your trial ended today. If [product] was useful, it's [price]/month to keep going — [link]. If the timing's off, no problem. You can reactivate anytime."
That last line matters. Giving people an easy out actually reduces the mental resistance to upgrading. You're not chasing them; you're leaving the door open.
5. Follow up once more at day seven post-expiry
Most businesses stop here. Don't. A lot of trial users convert in the week after expiry — they just needed time to get budget approval, finish a project, or convince a co-founder. Send one final message seven days later.
Keep it short and reference the gap: "It's been a week since your trial ended. Still thinking it over? Happy to answer any questions — just reply here." That's it. One message. No guilt. If they don't respond after this, let them go — you've done your job cleanly.
This whole sequence — five messages across roughly three weeks — is the difference between a 2% trial conversion rate and a 15%+ one for most early-stage tech products. The tactics aren't complicated. The hard part is actually writing the messages, scheduling them consistently, and tweaking the copy based on what's working.
That's exactly the kind of operational work you can hand off to a Sidekyk. Just describe your trial flow on WhatsApp, share your product details, and your Sidekyk can draft the entire sequence, help you set up the timing, and even handle individual follow-up replies from users who respond.
