The fastest way to follow up with silent trial users

Most trial users ghost you — here's how to win them back before the clock runs out.

You send someone a free trial. They sign up, poke around for a day or two, and then — nothing. No questions, no upgrade, no reply to your onboarding email. Just silence. For a small tech business, every one of those ghost users represents real money left on the table.

The problem is rarely that the product wasn't good enough. It's usually that no one reached out at the right moment, with the right message, before the trial window closed. Here's how to fix that.

1. Define "silent" before it's too late

You can't follow up on silence if you don't know when silence starts. Pick a clear trigger — for most SaaS products, it's something like: no login in 48 hours after sign-up or no core feature used within the first 3 days.

Write that definition down and make it part of your process. Once you have it, you can act on it consistently instead of relying on gut feel or remembering to check a dashboard.

2. Send a one-line check-in, not a marketing email

When a trial user goes quiet, the instinct is to send a polished email with feature highlights and a comparison table. Resist that. What actually works is a short, human message that sounds like it came from a real person — because it should.

Something like: "Hey [Name] — noticed you haven't had a chance to dig in yet. Anything get in the way, or can I help you get started?" That's it. No banner image, no footer full of links. One sentence that opens a door. Reply rates on plain-text check-ins consistently beat designed newsletters for this use case.

3. Time your follow-ups in a sequence, not a blast

One message is rarely enough, but three messages in three days will get you blocked. A simple sequence that works:

  • Day 2 of silence — the one-line check-in (see above)
  • Day 4 of silence — a single tip showing the fastest path to value in your product
  • Day 6 of silence (last day of trial) — a low-pressure nudge that acknowledges the trial is ending and offers a quick call or extension

Space them out, keep each one short, and stop after three. You've done your job. Anything more crosses into spam territory.

4. Personalise by what they did — or didn't — do

A user who signed up and never logged in again needs a different message than one who logged in four times but never completed setup. If you have even basic usage data, split those two groups and tailor your first message accordingly.

For the never-logged-in group: remove friction — ask if there was a technical problem or if they need a hand getting in. For the logged-in-but-stuck group: point directly at the one thing they didn't finish. Specificity makes the message feel helpful rather than automated, even when it is.

5. Offer something concrete, not a vague "let me know"

Vague offers get vague responses (which means no responses). Instead of "feel free to reach out if you need anything," give them something specific to say yes or no to:

  • "Want me to set up a 10-minute screen share this week?"
  • "Can I send you a short walkthrough video for your use case?"
  • "Would a two-day extension help you get a proper look?"

A concrete ask is easier to act on. Even a "no thanks" is useful — it tells you the user is at least reading, and it closes the loop cleanly.

Following up with silent trial users is exactly the kind of repetitive-but-important work that falls through the cracks when you're running a small tech business. You know it matters, but it's easy to deprioritise when you're juggling product, support, and everything else.

That's the kind of task you can hand off to a Sidekyk. Tell your Sidekyk on WhatsApp who went silent, what sequence you want to run, and what tone to use — and it handles the drafting, timing, and sending while you focus on building. Head to sidekyk.ai to see how it works.
