How to stop losing leads who ask 'what does your AI do?'
Turn the most common objection in AI sales into a moment that builds trust and closes faster.
"What does your AI actually do?" Sounds like curiosity. Usually it's a polite version of "I don't trust this yet."
If you're selling an AI product or service, you've heard this question on almost every discovery call — and if you don't have a crisp, confident answer ready, the lead cools off before you even get to pricing. Here are five tactics to fix that.
1. Lead with a job, not a feature
Most AI founders answer this question by listing capabilities: "It uses an LLM to process your inputs and generate outputs." That tells the prospect nothing they care about.
Instead, answer in terms of the job it does for a specific person. "It's the thing that reads every inbound customer message and drafts a reply in your tone — before you've had your first coffee." When the prospect can picture a real task disappearing from their plate, the question is answered before they even process the technical details.
2. Keep one "wow in 60 seconds" demo ready at all times
Explanation only goes so far. A live demo — even a tiny one — removes doubt faster than any pitch script.
Pick the single most impressive thing your AI does and build a repeatable 60-second walkthrough around it. Screen share, voice note, short Loom — whatever fits your sales channel. The rule: the prospect should see the output before the minute is up. Seeing the thing work beats hearing you describe it every single time.
3. Borrow proof from your happiest customer
When someone asks what your AI does, what they're really asking is: has it worked for someone like me?
Have one or two before/after customer stories memorised — not polished case studies, just a plain sentence or two:
- Before: "Maria was spending four hours a day answering the same five customer questions."
- After: "She set up our AI in a weekend. Now those replies go out in under two minutes and she's checked them off by 9 a.m."
Real numbers, real names (with permission), real tasks. That's the answer to "what does it do?"
4. Acknowledge what it doesn't do
This one feels counterintuitive, but it closes more leads than almost anything else. When you proactively say "it's not great at X yet," prospects relax. They stop trying to poke holes in your pitch and start listening.
After your job-based answer and your demo, add a one-liner about a genuine limitation. "It won't replace a human for complex complaints — but it handles the 80% of messages that are straightforward, so your team only touches the ones that actually need a person." Honesty signals confidence. Confidence builds trust. Trust closes deals.
5. Give them a name for it
Abstract things are hard to buy. Named things are easier.
If your AI doesn't have a distinct name or a short label — give it one. Not a buzzword, just a plain noun that fits the job. "Your inbox co-pilot." "Your 24/7 first-responder." "Your social media drafter." When a prospect can refer to it by name in their head ("oh, this is the thing that handles my DMs"), it stops being a vague tech product and becomes a tool they can imagine owning.
You can also give the category a name. Instead of saying "AI solution," try "AI teammate" or "AI assistant" — something that maps to a role they already understand. This small shift makes your pitch land faster and stick longer.
You shouldn't have to rehearse answers to "what does your AI do?" every time you jump on a call.
