How to stop losing clients who ghost after their first AI demo

Turn one-and-done demo no-shows into paying clients with these five follow-up tactics.

You ran a great demo. They said "wow, this is exactly what we need." Then — nothing. No reply to your follow-up email. No answer on the phone. Radio silence.

This is one of the most common and most demoralising patterns in AI consulting and SaaS. The problem usually isn't the demo itself. It's what happens in the 72 hours after it. Here's how to fix that window.

1. Send a personalised recap within the hour

Most people send a generic "thanks for your time" email the next morning. By then, the prospect has sat through two other calls, answered forty Slack messages, and completely forgotten the specific moment that made them lean forward in their seat.

Send a short, specific recap — ideally within 60 minutes of the call ending. Name the exact use case that lit them up. "You mentioned your team spends three hours a week manually pulling reports — here's the clip of how that gets automated." Specificity is what separates a follow-up they actually read from one they archive.

2. Give them one clear next step, not three options

A confused prospect does nothing. If your follow-up says "let me know if you want a trial, or we could do a deeper technical call, or I can send over the pricing doc" — they'll close the tab and tell themselves they'll think about it later.

Pick one next step and make it dead simple:

  • "Can we book 20 minutes Thursday to walk through your setup?" — or —
  • "I've started a free trial for you. Here's your login."

Remove the decision fatigue. One door, clearly labelled.

3. Follow up on WhatsApp (not just email)

If they gave you a phone number, use it. A short WhatsApp message the day after the demo cuts through the inbox noise in a way that email almost never does anymore. Keep it conversational and low-pressure:

"Hey [Name] — just checking in after yesterday's demo. Happy to answer any questions or push things forward whenever you're ready. No rush."

That's it. You're not pestering — you're being human. Most ghosting happens because prospects feel like they'd be "interrupting a sales process" if they replied with a simple question. A casual WhatsApp message gives them permission to do exactly that.

4. Build a 5-touch drip for the 2 weeks after the demo

One follow-up is not a follow-up strategy. Research consistently shows that most deals close after the fifth contact, yet most salespeople give up after two. Map out a short sequence:

  • Day 1: Personalised recap (see tactic 1)
  • Day 3: One relevant case study or result from a similar client
  • Day 5: A short "did anything change on your end?" check-in
  • Day 9: A piece of useful content — a tip, a benchmark, something genuinely helpful
  • Day 14: A polite close — "Should I keep this on my radar or put it on the back-burner?"

The last message is important. Giving people a graceful exit actually increases reply rates, because it feels like a conversation rather than a chase.

5. Fix the demo itself if ghosting is chronic

If more than half your demos end in silence, the follow-up process isn't the only problem — the demo is probably leaving too many questions unanswered. Common culprits:

  • No pain anchoring. You showed features without tying them to a cost the prospect actually feels.
  • No social proof in the room. Prospects need to see someone like them succeeding, not just a slick UI.
  • No urgency. "Take your time" is polite but it kills momentum. Give them a real reason to move now — a cohort start date, a pricing window, a limited onboarding slot.

Record your demos and watch them back. The moment a prospect's energy dips is almost always the moment you pivoted away from their specific problem and into generic feature territory.

Following up consistently is one of those tasks that every founder knows matters and almost nobody does well — because it's repetitive, it requires personalisation at scale, and it competes with every other fire you're fighting.

That's exactly the kind of work you can hand off to a Sidekyk. Tell your Sidekyk on WhatsApp who the demo was with, what got them excited, and what the next step should be — and it handles the sequenced follow-ups, the WhatsApp nudges, and the reminders so nothing falls through the cracks. Try it at sidekyk.ai and stop leaving deals on the table.
